Chasing Inclusion And Representation From My Happy Place

Policy lens / governance tools

My happy place is writing policies, especially ones that challenge me to solve complex problems. What a surprise, I’m a bit of a Geek!

Inclusion policies are some of the most challenging I’ve had the privilege to write, review and analyse. Navigating how to achieve the ambition of inclusion, whilst balancing the ethics, moral implications and societal norms is just too much fun.

Happy evenings and weekends in policy world aside. When you are facing a challenge of working on new policies or governance initiatives that are centered on inclusion, improving accessibility, and diversifying your offer, a point from me to you for consideration, is, do your stakeholders want and need this? Who is the governance tool you are trying to introduce for, and how is it benefiting them?

It is easy to get caught up in societal trends and the most popular opinion from social forums, but when you have competing work priorities and endless amounts of things to do, take a moment to understand your stakeholder demographics, or the demographics of the future market you want to engage.

Consider the size and representative impact your new governance tool will have and if this is the best return on investment for you to be working on now. Furthermore, if you have the skills and representation around your board table to successfully deliver the policy, equality of opportunity, diversity, inclusion or governance initiative.

If you aren’t sure what skills you have, try Governance Geeks Board Skills Analysis to gauge which projects you have the skills to take on next or which you need to recruit to in order to achieve your objectives or project success.
